Your group insurance plan and cannabis

Back to articles

The recent legalisation of cannabis for recreational use in the absence of a medical condition justifying its consumption, has no impact on your group insurance plan. However, the question is worth looking at in the context of cannabis that is used as part as of a prescribed medical treatment.

In fact, the purchase and consumption of medicinal cannabis have been regulated in Canada since 2001 already, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act*.  Since this substance is not on the list of drugs approved by Health Canada, it is not covered by the group insurance plan by default.

Nevertheless, in the exceptional eventuality that a policy holder wished to include medicinal cannabis in the list of drugs that are covered by their GPM administered plan, it could be done in a selective way, with some restrictions. Do not hesitate to contact us for your available options regarding medicinal cannabis.
